Abstract:
Innovative ideas based on solutions using micro and nano fabrication technologies require access not only to high-end equipment but also to highly skilled personnel. Due to the complexity and diversity of micro and nano fabrication techniques, it is usually not possible for SMEs or even most research institutes. The European research infrastructure EUMINAfab seeks to overcome these barriers and provides researchers from throughout Europe with access to a specifically combined set of cutting edge technologies and expertise for structuring and characterising a multitude of different functional materials in dimensions from 100 microns down to several nanometres. Through peer reviewed scientific proposals access is given to the laboratories of the 10 EUMINAfab partners distributed over Europe. The new EOS brochure "How optics and photonics address Europe's challenges of the 21sts century" is a collection of ongoing and future research projects conducted by researchers from European research laboratories, industries and universities. Targeted at scientists, politicians and the broad public alike, it illustrates novel optics and photonics-based solutions for the fields of health, environment, energy, production, information & communication and security.
