Developing the innovative potential of optics and photonics relies on sophisticated simulation techniques. Modeling optical effects is as important as the analysis of complete optical systems. Those systems comprise classical optical components like lenses and mirrors, but also for instance micro- and nano-structured elements. A next-generation simulation approach must include rigorous electromagnetic modeling, geometrical optics, and all other approximate techniques in a suitable combination, which we call Computational Optics and Photonics.

The focus group Computational Optics and Photonics is an association of persons, working groups, institutions and companies within EOS that are engaged in optics simulation and design with emphasis on electromagnetic modeling, as well as specification and characterization of approximations. The focus group provides a platform for communication between experts from universities, institutions, and industry. The focus group intends to identify and formulate future trends in computational optics and photonics in Europe and worldwide. The group activities should help European institutions and companies to benefit from most up-to-date information in computational optics and photonics.

The focus group considers basic fields such as:

  • Paraxial and non-paraxial harmonic field modeling
  • Modeling source fields including spatial and temporal coherence and polarization
  • Measuring and modeling sources including mono- and multimode lasers, excimer laser, LEDs and thermal sources
  • Temporal pulse modeling
  • Field propagation techniques for homogeneous, inhomogeneous and anisotropic media
  • Discretisation and solution of Maxwell?s equations
  • Electromagnetic formulation of field energy and quality measures
  • Tolerancing strategies
  • Design with emphasis on non-imaging functionality like beam and wavefront shaping, beam splitting, light diffusing, etc.

Intended activities are:

  • Establishing a web representation including
    • Forum for discussion and information exchange
    • Member directory
    • Newsletter
  • Establishing an EOS Topical Meeting on Computational Optics and Photonics
    • Starting with a workshop on Computational Optics and Photonics
  • Initiation of European projects on or related to Computational Optics and Photonics
